If Johnny Manziel is ever set to become Johnny Football again, it won’t be in Cleveland.

The Browns cut the party boy former quarterback in March amid a downward spiral. Manziel was in the midst of a serious battle with a drinking problem when the team parted ways with him. Rumors also surfaced that he was doing drugs.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has vowed he is serious about a return to the league, but has also been seen partying on several occasions.

Manziel said even though he’s no longer a member of the Browns and doesn’t foresee ever having an opportunity to return, he’s still rooting for them.

“I doubt that’ll happen,” Manziel told TMZ Sports about a return to the Browns. “I wish them the best.”

The Browns can use all the help they can get. Cleveland is 0-2 to start the season and lost to Baltimore, 25-20, on Sunday. Manziel’s successor, former Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III, is sidelined 10-12 weeks with a shoulder injury, adding to the issues.

Manziel, 23, has had several issues staying away from the party scene over the past year. He was also indicted by a Dallas jury for a domestic incident with his ex-girlfriend, model Colleen Crowley, earlier this year.

Despite his many issues, Manziel had been adamant that he planned on staying sober to pursue a return to the NFL.

Nevertheless, a friend recently admitted that Manziel acknowledged he hit “rock bottom,” but he isn’t doing much to turn things around.

The former quarterback recently returned to Texas A&M to continue his pursuit of a degree. Whether an NFL return is in the cards down the line remains to be seen.

WATCH: Huskies, Buffaloes go back-to-back with amazing plays

Like many on this Friday night, the PAC-12 Championship game appears to be drunk.

With Washington leading 24-7 in the third quarter, somehow this Jake Browning pass to John Ross turned into a 19-yard touchdown for the Huskies:

So much happened on that play, including an insane one-handed catch by Ross. The play should’ve resulted in a sack, and if not a sack, maybe a pick-six. Definitely not a touchdown.

After you see that, you’re thinking, “Okay, this is not Colorado’s night,” which makes the ensuing kickoff even more hilarious:

Just how the Buffaloes drew it up. However, they would only turn that incredible break into three points.

This all comes after Washington head coach Chris Petersen said going into halftime that the Huskies are “having some sex with the no huddle“. The game appears some peak #PAC12AfterDark, and this is not a complaint.

Man Who Police Say Admitted Shooting Joe McKnight Is Freed Without Charge

Man Who Police Say Admitted Shooting Joe McKnight Is Freed Without Charge

The man held in the fatal shooting of the former N.F.L. player Joe McKnight in Louisiana admitted to investigators that he had pulled the trigger, the authorities said, but he was allowed to walk free without charges on Friday while they investigated the case.

The man, Ronald Gasser, 54, was released overnight, hours after Mr. McKnight was shot three times about 2:45 p.m. Thursday in an apparent “road rage” episode in Terrytown, La., about five miles southeast of New Orleans, the sheriff’s office said.

In a statement, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said that the two men had had a “heated verbal exchange.” During a news conference, Newell Normand, the sheriff, said the case might have escalated into violence because someone “recklessly” cut off the other while driving on a bridge.

The decision to release Mr. Gasser, who is white, infuriated supporters and former teammates of Mr. McKnight, who was black, and they took to social media to express outrage.

Sheriff Normand, appearing at times defiant and frustrated before reporters in Harvey, La., on Friday, said that the authorities would be very deliberate in the investigation, that witnesses were still being located and interviewed, and that people planning to protest must do it within a designated area or they would be jailed.

“This investigation is not going to be moved, influenced, coerced or changed in any way by any external force, comments or otherwise,” he said. “I can’t control what’s on the social networks, and if we want to continue to be silly, that’s fine.”

Asked if the case would be investigated as a hate crime, Sheriff Normand said that there was no evidence yet to suggest that it should be. “Everybody wants to make this about race,” he said. “This isn’t about race.”

Asked why Mr. Gasser was freed if he had admitted to the shooting, he said that in Louisiana there were some “relative statutes that provide defenses to certain crimes” and that the authorities would need to determine whether the shooting was justified.

He said that a man who had raised Mr. McKnight used to work as a deputy in the sheriff’s office and that some employees were “close with his family.” It was not immediately clear to whom he was referring; a 2007 profile in The Los Angeles Times said McKnight was raised by his mother, Jennifer McKnight.

Sheriff Normand disputed several rumors that had spread on social media, including that Mr. Gasser had stood over Mr. McKnight as he fired the gun, that a video has been recovered and that a witness had said Mr. McKnight apologized to Mr. Gasser before the shooting.

All of those are false, he said, and he advised people to believe only what they heard from officials like himself and the district attorney. “I strongly suggest you stop believing what you’re reading,” he said.

Councilman Mark Spears, who also spoke at the news conference, said: “It shouldn’t be a rush to judgment. The facts are still coming out, and we should base it on facts, not on Facebook and other social media.” He also said officials were “praying” for the McKnight family.

In a statement released before the news conference, the sheriff’s office said that Mr. Gasser had handed over a semiautomatic handgun to officers at the scene. The sheriff said at the news conference that Mr. Gasser had fired three rounds from inside his vehicle.

At a news conference, local N.A.A.C.P. officials criticized the authorities for releasing Mr. Gasser, pledging to demonstrate peacefully.

“We think a black man was lynched yesterday,” said Morris Reed, the president of the New Orleans branch of the N.A.A.C.P. “We are demanding some answers.”

Moe Reed Jr., a lawyer, added, “There is nothing that could’ve happened yesterday at 3 p.m. in broad daylight on a Louisiana highway, in front of many people passing back and forth in front of a gas station, that would make this man feel that he was in danger of losing his life.”

Mr. McKnight’s family is also seeking answers, his grandmother Barbara Franklin told The Associated Press on Friday. She said she had learned of Mr. Gasser’s release through the radio. “He might be released now, but God is going to bring about justice,” she said.

Mr. McKnight, a running back and special teams standout, was a decorated player at the University of Southern California. He was picked in the fourth round of the N.F.L. draft by the New York Jets, where he played from 2010 to 2012 before being cut by the team in 2013.

He played two more N.F.L. games with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. In February, he joined the Canadian Football League, spending time with the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Mr. Gasser is the owner of a telecommunications firm and a real estate business, according to The New Orleans Advocate.

The sheriff’s office on Friday night released details of a previous assault charge against Mr. Gasser stemming from an episode that happened at the same intersection as the shooting on Thursday.

It happened on Feb. 20, 2006, after a 51-year-old man called 911 to report that the driver of a red pickup truck was driving unsafely. The man saw a phone number on the truck to call if it was being operated unsafely and when he called the number, Mr. Gasser said he was the one driving.

The sheriff’s office said a “verbal altercation” began between the two and the man went to a service station at Holmes Boulevard and Berhman Highway in Terrytown to refuel his vehicle. Mr. Gasser, who had followed him, “confronted him and began to strike him with a closed fist several times,” the office said in a statement. Mr. Gasser drove away and the man called 911.

Investigators at a later date found Mr. Gasser and he was issued a misdemeanor summons for simple battery, which was dismissed, the office said. “We will continue to research this matter in order to determine the reason for the dismissal,” the statement said.

On Friday some social media users and McKnight’s former Jets teammates expressed bafflement and anger after Mr. Gasser was released.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Damon Harrison, a former Jet who currently plays for the New York Giants, wrote on Twitter. “Shoot in the air and you’re in jail for at least a week. Lord help us all.”

Damien Woody, a former offensive lineman and current N.F.L. analyst for ESPN, also said he had trouble understanding the move.

In some ways, the episode bore close resemblance to the death of another pro athlete in New Orleans. In April, Will Smith, a former defensive end for the New Orleans Saints who was black, was shot and killed after a vehicle collision. In that case, Cardell Hayes, who is black, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder.

Jarvis DeBerry, a columnist for The Times-Picayune, wrote on Friday that the immediate response was noticeably different.

“Normand is going to have a tough time convincing the public that this isn’t another example of disparate responses to identical situations, another example of the race of the suspect altering the response to the crime,” he wrote.

Nba 2K10 Draft Combine
The Basketball is the popular sports in in america. The NBA is where you can some incredibly athletically gifted people in today’s world. They are also incredibly talented capable to do stuff most people can only imagine managing.

There is one challenge that fans can do it tips for get nba 2k17 mt coins news can don’t you. They can bet on the NBA games making whole lots of money doing this can. How great would it be to watch after the sport you love and earn money from it? Because of this pretty much what sports betting is about and the successful ones do imagine that they are usually paid to watch out something these people watch as the name indicated.

So as soon as the iPad was introduced, I was able to my usual research assess the product’s usefulness around my daily daily life. It’s this kind of when my favorite friend turned out looking because of nba 2k17 guide reviews. This is when Anyway i recommended nba 2k17 mt coins. There is plenty written in the iPad’s “cool” features, design, and potential, and a decent bit written on its technical flaws. But, not so much discussed about its actual usefulness in daily days. With many people now asking me “how do such as your iPad,” I figure I definitely write the nba 2k17 guide to help others determine whether it suits them – after all, it’s not really a cheap acquisition.

However to do this game, nba 2k17 news I’m keen on the Lakers at home, but Do not think think that: A. Gonna come as elementary as their last three wins, and D. They will not be able t cover multiplication.

If you cannot bet against your favorite team, kind avoid betting on their games altogether. This test has proven you could not bet objectively in the event you avoid these games while focusing on betting on versus where bother . have a desire for who wins or will lose.

The History Of Hockey Town

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

In Hockey Town, there’s only one team to root for — the Detroit Red Wings. The team currently resides just a luxury sedan or limo ride away at Joe Louis Arena, located in downtown Detroit. Here are some team historical highlights:

1920s – The Red Wings go all the way back to the old Western Hockey League, when the Victoria (British Columbia) Cougars were sold to a group from Detroit on September 25, 1926. The team played its home games in Windsor, Ontario. The Victoria Cougars had won the Stanley Cup in 1925 and were Cup finalists in 1926, but the Detroit Cougars finished 12-28-4; the NHL’s worst record for the 1926-27 season.

Help came in 1928, in the form of Jack Adams as the team’s coach and general manager. Adam’s tenure as coach and GM would last until the 1962-63 season, when Sid Abel took over. With Adams at the helm, the team made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

The team also moved into the brand new Olympia Stadium for the 1927-28 season. A Detroit and professional hockey landmark, the Olympia would serve as the home for the franchise through the midway point of the 1979-80 season. Willing to try anything, Jack Adams changed the name for the 1930-31 season to the Detroit Falcons.

In 1932 the financial problems ended when grain millionaire and shipping magnate James Norris Sr. purchased the team. Norris, like Adams, was a Canadian turned American. He had once played hockey for the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association’s Winged Wheelers.

When the two men met, Norris and Adams agreed that the team’s new logo would be a winged wheel and the club’s nickname changed to the Red Wings.

The franchise already had a few players who would contribute to the team’s first two Stanley Cups in 1936 and 1937 such as Ebbie Goodfellow, Larry Aurie, Herbie Lewis, Hec Kilrea and John Sorrell. Detroit slumped to under .500 and missed the play-offs in 1934-35, but came back to win the first Stanley Cup in the franchise’s history in 1936, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs three games-to-one in the finals.

The Red Wings went on to repeat as Cup Champions in 1937, winning three games-to-two over the New York Rangers in the finals. The 1936 and 1937 teams featured two of the greatest players ever to wear the winged wheel in Ebbie Goodfellow and Syd Howe.

Detroit’s blue line also got an addition in 1938-39 when Jack Stewart was introduced to the NHL. His dark features and physical game earned him the nickname “Black Jack” Stewart and he terrorized opposing forwards with bone-crushing hits and his great strength.

The Red Wings advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1941 and 1942, losing to the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs. But the Red Wings got their revenge on the Bruins and Brimsek by winning the third Stanley Cup in team history in a four game sweep of Boston in 1943.

With the promotions of Ted Lindsay (1944-45), Gordie Howe (1946-47), Red Kelly (1947-48) and Terry Sawchuk (1949-50) to the NHL and the return of both Abel and Stewart from the RCAF, one of the greatest dynasties in NHL history was set in motion. Detroit finished second overall during the 1947-48 regular season, five points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs. But the team then ran off a streak of seven-straight first overall finishes from 1948-49 until 1954-55 and won four Stanley Cups (1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955).

The 1950 Stanley Cup was also the first appearance of an octopus on Detroit ice at a hockey game. The eight tentacles represented the eight games that a team needed to win to capture the Stanley Cup.

Detroit didn’t return to the Stanley Cup Finals until 1961, when they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks. There was jubilation at the Olympia in1963 when Gordie Howe broke Maurice “Rocket” Richard’s record for the most career NHL goals with his 545th against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Wings reached the playoffs four times from 1966-67 until 1985-86, a period that was highlighted by the veteran line of Howe, Alex Delvecchio and Frank Mahovlich during the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons.

The team moved to Joe Louis Arena in December 1979. The arena hosted the NHL All-Star Game in January 1980. The game featured a 50-year old Gordie Howe, who was in his last season with the Hartford Whalers after returning to pro hockey in 1973-74 in the World Hockey Association.

The Norris’ sold the Red Wings in 1982 to Mike and Marian Ilitch, who owned Little Caesars Pizza. One of their first hires was Jimmy Devellano as the team’s general manager and he selected an 18-year-old center named Steve Yzerman as the fourth overall pick of the 1983 NHL Draft.

Detroit made the playoffs in both 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons but lost in the first round each season. The Red Wings collected only 40 points in 1985-86 to finish last overall in the NHL, but the disappointing campaign would prove as one step backward before Detroit would take several steps in the right direction.

Detroit hired new coach Jacques Demers he made the 21-year-old Yzerman the team’s captain. Demers won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in both 1986-87 and 1987-88. In 1988-89, Yzerman set team records for goals, assists and points with 65 goals, 90 assists and 155 points – which is the highest point total in NHL history for a player not named Gretzky or Lemieux.

Young players like Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Vladimir Konstantinov, Slava Kozlov, Keith Primeau, Martin Lapointe, Darren McCarty and Chris Osgood and veterans like Dino Ciccarelli, Paul Coffey and Ray Sheppard were acquired via trade. All but Primeau, Ciccarelli, Coffey and Sheppard contributed to the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup victories in 1997 and 1998.

The 1999-2000 season was one of milestones for the Red Wings. Yzerman scored goal No. 600, Verbeek tallied No. 500, Shanahan collected No. 400 and Fedorov earned No. 300. Yzerman also recorded his 1,500th point and 900th assist while Verbeek scored his 1,000th point.

The Red Wings finished with the league’s second best record in 2000-01, but were eliminated by the Los Angeles Kings during the first round of the 2001 playoffs. After finishing second in Norris Trophy voting for three straight years, Lidstrom finally won his first Norris as the NHL’s top defenseman.

In 2001, with league-best 116 points, the team won the franchise’s 10th Stanley Cup after the Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in five games during the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Vikings are one of 5 professional football teams now in the North division of the NFC and their home field advantage occurs at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome located in Minneapolis, MN. Minnesota is home to a large number of residents with Scandinavian ancestors and the name of the team is a proud reference to their Nordic ancestry. For the past 40 years, this one ball team has been a leader in consistency and success and they have appeared at 4 Super bowls.

When the Minnesota Vikings made their debut as an NFL expansion team in 1961, they secured Quarterback Fran Tarkenton in the draft but had only 1 winning season in the next 7 years. A trade of this Quarterback to the NY Giants gave them some new and extremely valuable defensive rookies that would soon become stars. At one time, the defensive lineup Grant put together showcased the most superb collection of players in the history of football, and collectively they were known as the Purple People Eaters. Even the offensive unit belonging to Minnesota was unmatched and in 1969, the team’s performance was the best in the league. The Minnesota Vikings tickets were snatched up quickly by fans eager to watch their team dominate their NFC division.

The Vikings defensive roster during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s was listing famous football names like Carl Eller, Alan Page and Big Jim Marshall. Fran Tarkenton also returned and he would find touchdowns easy to come by with talented players like Chuck Foreman, Ahmad Rashad, and John Gilliam on the field. While the purple and gold colors of the Vikings controlled the NFC, they would be denied a Super Bowl win during their 4 attempts.

David Ortiz

David Ortiz is in the midst of one fine victory lap to close his career, but the thought of hanging up his cleats appears to be be bothering him more and more.

Ortiz, 40, is batting .318 with 36 homers and 121 RBIs. Big Papi also lends the majors with a .634 slugging percentage and a 1.037 OPS entering Wednesday, so it’s easy to understand how hard it must be for him to walk away from the diamond.

While playing out his final regular season days with the Red Sox knee deep in a pennant race, Ortiz admits it’s hard to swallow the fact that it will all be over for him soon, even going so far as to express regret.

“I wish I could continue playing, but it takes a lot for me to prepare for the games every year,” Ortiz told the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. “I’ve been dealing with things the last four years and it gets worse, you know what I’m saying? And so I have to put a lot of effort and a lot of work to play at my highest level out there. At some point, it wears you out.”

Ortiz is in his 20th MLB season and appears headed toward the playoffs. The Red Sox (87-64) own a four-game lead over the Blue Jays (83-68) in the AL East entering Wednesday. The last time Boston won the division was in 2013, when it won the World Series for the third time in nine seasons.

Though he expressed some sorrow, Ortiz, who hit a homer against the Orioles on Tuesday, knows his time has come.

“I don’t know if I can play til 50,” Ortiz said. “I play in a lot of pain. I’ve been taking a lot of anti-inflammatories and stuff to get through it. We have good doctors and training staff, and they work hard with all of us, but it is what it is. Like I say, I love this game and this game is my everything, but it’s not forever.”

Steve Kerr admits using marijuana to treat chronic back pain

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/2gN6YpN

Steve Kerr admits using marijuana to treat chronic back pain

The campaign for allowing the use of marijuana in professional sports got another advocate Friday.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, in an appearance on CSN Bay Area’s “The Warriors Insider” podcast, admitted he recently smoked marijuana as a way to treat his chronic back pain.

“I guess maybe I could even get in some trouble for this, but I’ve actually tried (marijuana) twice during the last year and a half when I’ve been going through this pain, this chronic pain that I’ve been dealing with,” Kerr told host Monte Pool, as transcribed by ESPN.com.

“… I don’t even know if I’m subject to a drug test or any laws from the NBA, but I tried it, and it didn’t help at all. But it was worth it, because I’m searching for answers on pain. But I’ve tried painkillers and drugs of other kinds, as well, and those have been worse. It’s tricky.”

Kerr, who missed the first half of the 2015-16 season while recovering from back surgery, believes professional sports at least should consider the benefits of marijuana as a painkiller as opposed to other drugs, which could be more harmful.

“I’m not a pot person. It doesn’t agree with me,” he said. “I tried it a few times, and it did not agree with me at all. So I’m not the expert on this stuff. But I do know this: If you’re an NFL player, in particular, and you got lot of pain, I don’t think there’s any question that pot is better for your body than Vicodin.

“And yet, athletes everywhere are prescribed Vicodin like it’s Vitamin C, like it’s no big deal. And there’s like this perception in our country that over-the-counter drugs are fine but pot is bad. Now, I think that’s changing.”

NBA players need to fail three drug tests before they’re disciplined for using recreational drugs like marijuana, but other pro leagues, most notably the NFL, have stricter rules. Kerr hopes those rules become more lenient.

“You’re seeing that change in these laws that you’re talking about in different states, including California,” he added. “But I would just hope that sports leagues are able to look past the perception.”

Look in internet as your own everyday NBA change! Also, it are usually a great reference point for predicting the NBA season gaming titles.

“Dead Rising 3” was announced next with an in-game exhibition. First thing I noticed? The on screen character counts are huge compared to your previous wave. Other than that though, nothing seems to really bring this title into “next gen” for me.

Shannon Sharpe — Joe McKnight Investigators Should Not Rush to Judgment (VIDEO)

EXCLUSIVE

NFL great Shannon Sharpe is calling for patience and diligence in the Joe McKnight killing — patience on the part of outraged citizens, and diligence from the cops.

The Hall of Famer talked to us about the protests in the wake of Ronald Gasser‘s release, without charges, after he admittedly shot McKnight 3 times. FS1’s ‘Undisputed‘ co-host isn’t ready to say this is an open and shut case. In fact, he channeled Johnnie Cochran.

Btw, we got Shannon outside a benefit Friday night for Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans of America, held in Pacific Palisades.

Good guy, good cause.

Bret Hart has never been shy about putting Seth Rollins in a verbal Sharpshooter.

The WWE Hall of Famer has gone on record and critiqued “The Architect” for being dangerous in the ring.

Hart took exception to Rollins breaking John Cena’s nose with an errant knee last year. He was also critical of Rollins injuring Sting’s neck with a Buckle Bomb last September, which subsequently led to the end of “The Vigilante’s” career.

After Rollins injured Finn Balor with a similar power bomb maneuver into the barricade at “SummerSlam” this past August, Hart was once again very vocal about his displeasure.

While he’s never one to back down from
His strong opinions, Hart made it clear he has no ill will toward Rollins, but has maintained his criticisms are valid.

“Actually, I’m a big fan of Seth Rollins, Hart said on ‘Heated Comments with Booker T’ (via WrestlingInc). “I mean, it sounds like I’ve been a little hard on him the last few months, but I’m trying to make a point to make him a better wrestler, to live up to what I expect out of him. And we’re in this business. It’s not about hurting people, and, too often, people misunderstand my point, and, maybe, including him. Now, he thinks I’ve got a hard on for him, or I’m out to get him, or out to make him sound bad. I’m not. I love his wrestling and I like him as a person. He’s always a respectful guy. I hope Seth Rollins becomes the safest, best wrestler in the world. And I wish him all the luck in the world.”

Rollins has been in a top spot as as singles star on the WWE roster for two years and is currently feuding with Kevin Owens, who won the WWE Universal Championship after it was vacated by Balor due to the injury.

Owens and Rollins will face-off for the gold this Sunday at “Clash of the Champions” at the Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Rollins has acknowledged Hart’s comments in the past and admitted they hurt his feelings.

Bret Hart had some comments about me and how safe I am in the ring because of John’s nose, and then, me getting hurt while I was the champion and just said that you couldn’t do that because people relied on you as a top guy,” Rollins said on ‘Talk is Jericho’ (via WrestlingInc). “And that hurt my feelings. And I haven’t seen Bret since then, but, I mean, I know he comes from a different era when he worked through a lot of stuff, but, man, that sucked.

“That hurt my feelings. I’m like, ‘dude, I idolized you. You were one of the guys who, at 6’1″ [and] 230 [pounds], you were a guy who I was like, ‘I can do that because Bret Hart does it”, so, like, for him to [say that]. He [has] got to know how hard I’m working every night for him to kind of say that in an interview.”

Everything you need to know for CFB Championship Week

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/2fTn58c

Everything you need to know for CFB Championship Week

It’s finally championship week! There’s a lot on the line as conference championships are up for grabs and four College Football Playoff berths are out there for the taking. This is an interesting time for the fairly new Playoff system as all eight of the previous playoff teams were conference champions. However, Ohio State could get a playoff spot despite not only not winning their conference championship but not even winning their division. If for some reason Alabama loses to Florida, the Tide would still most likely be in the playoff.

Teams like Clemson, Washington, Penn State and Oklahoma not only want to win but may feel a need to make a huge impression as it seems that five teams are fighting for two playoff spots. So let’s see what’s on tap for championship week.

1-Southeastern Conference

Game of the Week: Alabama vs Florida
On paper, this should be yet another Alabama blowout. The Gators are a good team but not really on Bama’s level. This season, the undefeated Tide have won 11 of 12 games by double digits and won the last two SEC title games in convincing fashion. Interestingly, this is the ninth time these two will meet for the SEC Championship (they’ve split the first eight games) and second year in a row. Even more interesting is that Alabama may not even need to win this game to get into the College Football Playoff.

Heisman Watch: Jalen Hurts, Alabama
Hurts has been solid all season long and gets the hype as the quarterback on the No. 1 team in the land. The freshman has played well this year, but not well enough to win the Heisman. He should be in the running for a few years coming.

Surprise/ Disappointment
How about Kentucky? Who would have thought that the Wildcats would be a bowl team and tied for 2nd in the SEC East Division after their season opening loss to Southern Miss? Plus they capped off the regular season by beating rival Louisville and won 7 games for the first time since 2009.

Tennessee spent yet another year not reaching their potential. This was a year that big things were set to happen in Knoxville. This was finally their year. Yet, they finish with a 4-4 league mark and lost to South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Ugh..

2-Atlantic Coast Conference

Game of the Week: Clemson vs Virginia Tech
Clemson wins and they’ve pretty much nail down a playoff berth. A loss and it is unlikely they can recover. Virginia Tech would love to go to the Orange Bowl with a win. The Atlantic Division has won the last five ACC titles, which bears well for the favored Tigers. Virginia Tech has only beaten one ranked team all season (North Carolina, and they are no longer ranked) but have had a solid season in the Justin Fuente’s first campaign.

Heisman Watch: Lamar Jackson, Louisville
That iron grip that Jackson had on the Heisman trophy has really, really softened.  The losses to Houston and Kentucky have really tightened this race. He should still be the favorite, but don’t discount voters using this last month against him.

Surprise/Disappointment
Virginia Tech has to be the biggest surprise of the ACC. The Hokies were entering the post Frank Beamer era and no one knew what to expect following consecutive 7-6 seasons. Va. Tech came through with the Coastal Division title.

The biggest disappointment has to be Duke. In a season where it seemed as if anyone could win the Coastal Division, Duke shockingly was a non-factor.

3-Big Ten Conference

Game of the Week: Wisconsin vs Penn State
Here’s the one that will have everyone guessing. Will the winner of this game get into the playoff? Maybe not, but a Big Ten team (or two) will still get in. Ohio State is in even though they didn’t win the East division. Michigan is ranked higher than both of these teams so it can be assumed that they are valued a bit more by the committee. Of course, whomever wins this game (plus Michigan) would need Washington or Clemson to lose their title showdowns. If that happens, could the winner of this game leapfrog Michigan and get into the playoff? I mean, they’d actually be the conference champions … and Michigan’s beef is that they beat both of these schools during the regular season.

Heisman Watch: Jabrill Peppers, Michigan
Peppers has been awesome for Michigan, but even he knows that it is rare that a primary defensive player wins the Heisman.

Surprise/Disappointment
Who had Penn State in the Big Ten Championship game? Just a few years removed from one of the biggest scandals in NCAA history and the Nittany Lions are in the Big Ten title game after being the only team to beat Ohio State. Yep, in a year that was all about Ohio State and Michigan, it was Penn State who ended up winning the division.

Remember when Michigan State beat Notre Dame and we were set for a top ten showdown with Wisconsin? Well, they would go on to lose 9 of their remaining 10 games … with the lone win coming over awful Rutgers.

4-Pacific 12 Conference

Game of the Week: Washington vs Colorado
Washington heads into this game feeling as if they win then they are one of the four teams in the College Football Playoff. Right now, they are ranked No. 4 and a win over Colorado would follow up their win over Washington State and should be enough to get them in. A loss would most likely eliminate the Huskies from getting a chance at a national championship. And how about Colorado just being in this game after a tough start to their Pac-12 membership. The South Division has never won this game.

Heisman Watch: Jake Browning, Washington
Browning should really be buzzed about more than he is. He is among the best quarterbacks in terms of the typical passing stats and helms one of the best teams in the land. He’s thrown for 40 TDs and just 7 interceptions while completing 65 percent of his passes.

Surprise/Disappointment
In their first five years in the Pac-12, the Colorado Buffaloes were 5-40 in league play. This season, they won 8 games. Unbelievable. Now they are playing for the Pac-12 title.

Two years ago, Oregon was playing for the national championship. They had the cool uniforms and money rolling in and were building a powerhouse. Now they finish an embarrassing 4-8 season by firing their head coach and looking to rebuild and try to get back to elite status.

5-Big 12 Conference

Game of the Week: Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State
The Big 12 doesn’t have an actual conference championship game, but this is virtually the same thing. The winner of the Sooners-Cowboys game will be the conference champion and most likely in the Sugar Bowl (there is a slim chance for a CFP berth). Oklahoma could be only the second Power 5 school to finish the season with an undefeated conference record. It won’t be easy — Oklahoma State won the last time they went to Norman.

Heisman Watch: Dede Westbrook, Oklahoma
While Baker Mayfield has played well during Big 12 play, Westbrook has been a major part of that. He has caught 15 TDs among his 70 receptions and has been one of the most exciting playmakers in the country.

Surprise/Disappointment
West Virginia had one heck of a run for a while there. They were undefeated through six games and their only two losses were to the two teams playing for the Big 12 title game — Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.

I’m going with TCU as my disappointment. Sure, Texas turned on us, but it wasn’t like big things were expected from the Horns, and there were rumblings that TCU was a true contender. The Horned Frogs were expected to contend with Oklahoma for the Big 12 title and instead squeaked through the season by barely beating Kansas and losing to pretty much everyone that was better than them.

6-Group of Five

Game of the Week: Western Michigan vs Ohio
Let’s see … an undefeated record and a spot in the Cotton Bowl is on the line for Western Michigan. All this for a school that had never been ranked … ever … prior to this season. To get this far and not cash it in would be next to devastating for the Broncos. Ohio is looking for its first MAC title since 1968.

Under-the-radar Game: Navy vs Temple
Not only is this game big since it is for the American championship but it could be for a bid to the Cotton Bowl. If Navy wins this game and, say, Western Michigan loses the MAC title game then Navy would actually have a great look at getting to the New Year’s Six game. Now here is where it gets weird: if Navy is the highest ranked Group of 5 champion on Sunday, then it could put a freeze on the entire bowl picture. See, Navy still has to play Army next weekend and even though they’d be heavy favorites, the bowls can’t slot teams until the Army-Navy game is played. Or Temple could win and this wouldn’t even matter.

We also have San Diego State-Wyoming (Mountain West), Western Kentucky-Louisiana Tech (Conference USA).

Heisman Watch: Donnel Pumphrey, San Diego State
Pumphrey will play in the Mountain West championship game and a bowl game, which could push Pumphrey into the all-time leading rusher in FBS history.

Surprise/Disappointment
As mentioned above, Western Michigan became ranked for the first time this season. They join Alabama as the only undefeated regular season team and are in position to wins its first MAC title since 1988. To top it off, they are a win away from likely being in the Cotton Bowl … by far the biggest bowl game they’ve ever participated in.

I think we were all disappointed when Houston lost to Navy. We were even more disappointed when they lost to SMU and had zero shot at crashing the College Football Playoff party.

How to watch West Virginia vs. Baylor: Live stream, game time, TV

Both West Virginia and Baylor hope to gain momentum heading into their bowl games when the Mountaineers host the Bears in each team’s regular season finale.

With a victory, West Virginia (9-2, 6-2) can finish with 10 regular season wins for the first time since 2011. The Mountaineers drubbed Iowa State 49-19 last week, but earlier losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State mean that West Virginia can finish no better than third in the Big 12 this season.

On the other side, Baylor (6-5, 3-5) is in freefall. The Bears have lost five straight after starting the season 6-0, with the defense surrendering nearly 48 points per game during that stretch. Freshman quarterback Zach Smith has been forced into a starting role for Baylor with senior Seth Russell likely out for the season with an ankle injury.

Baylor won last year’s meeting between the two teams, 62-38.

Behind Tiger Woods’s Return, a (Ryder Cup) Team Effort

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Behind Tiger Woods’s Return, a (Ryder Cup) Team Effort

NASSAU, the Bahamas — Before this year’s Ryder Cup, Zach Johnson was scrolling online and stumbled upon distributors selling T-shirts that he thought would be perfect for the dozen United States team members to wear when they gathered at Hazeltine National Golf Club for that biennial event.

He ran the idea by his wife, Kim, who did not share his enthusiasm. She talked him out of it.

But Johnson could not let go of the idea. Upon arriving at Hazeltine in September, Johnson sought second, third — even 11th — opinions. His teammates’ responses were overwhelmingly positive.

So Johnson ordered more than a dozen of the shirts and had them shipped express to Minnesota, where the players unveiled them during a team meeting after the first day of competition. There they stood, 12 strong, with “Make Tiger Woods Great Again” written across their chests.

Woods, a 14-time major champion, could not play because of a bad back that had sidelined him for more than a year and threatened his career. But his selfless work as an assistant captain played a significant role in the United States’ resounding victory over Europe.

In the weeks, and months, before the Ryder Cup, Woods had gone above and beyond what was required of him to help the team. And now it was the team’s turn to do whatever it could to help him get back on the course. The T-shirts were just the start of a campaign that gained momentum last week when Woods teed it up in the Hero World Challenge, the unofficial PGA Tour event that he hosts.

In returning to competition, Woods, who turns 41 this month, is having to make up the blueprint as he goes. No former No. 1 player has been sidelined from competition for more than a year at Woods’s age and returned to resume his winning ways.

So where does Woods turn for inspiration? To the tennis player Juan Martín del Potro, a one-time United States Open champion whose four wrist operations cost him two years of his career and who started 2016 ranked 1,041st in the world and ended it by leading Argentina to its first Davis Cup title?

To his longtime friend and practice partner Derek Jeter, the retired Yankees shortstop who broke his left ankle when he was in his late 30s, returned too soon and reinjured it, costing him parts of two seasons?

Woods seemed as surprised as anyone by his answer.

“It’s hard to fathom how many of the players here have really — have rallied and really tried to help me come back and offered any kind of advice, any kind of help, whether it’s with equipment, it’s playing, it’s getting out and going out to dinner, just being part of the tour and part of the fraternity,” Woods said.

He added, “I’ve had a lot more close friends out here than I thought.”

It was hard to get close to Woods in his prime when he was winning tournaments by eight or nine strokes. Dustin Johnson, a Ryder Cup teammate whose partner, Paulina Gretzky, is the daughter of the hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, was asked who he was more intimidated to meet for the first time, Gretzky or Woods. He pondered the question for several seconds, then said, “Probably Tiger, for sure.”

Johnson explained that the first time he met Woods was when they played in the same group in a tournament.

“Yeah, that was definitely more intimidating,” he said. “Wayne’s way too nice.”

Henrik Stenson, the reigning British Open champion from Sweden, played 10 events on the PGA Tour for the first time in 2006, a year when Woods won eight of his 15 starts. Woods, he said, was “always very much into his own bubble.”

“Certainly there would be a big reason for that as well,” Stenson said. “If you stop and talk to everyone, if you’re signing everything, it’s just impossible to do that.”

At the Ryder Cup, the American players got a glimpse of the chess game that is Woods’s life and how he must always be thinking two or three moves ahead. Knowing that he had planned to return for the PGA Tour’s 2016-17 season-opening event in California, which started 11 days after the Ryder Cup ended, the American players tried to coax Woods to hit balls with them.

Brandt Snedeker recalled, “He said, ‘Man, do you know what a distraction that would have been if I had been out there hitting range balls with you?’”

Snedeker added, “We hadn’t even thought about that.”

Snedeker was vacationing in Fiji when he heard that Woods had withdrawn from the event in California three days before the first round. The timing struck many as curious, but to Snedeker, it made complete sense. His initial reaction, he said, was, “It’s probably because he was with us at the Ryder Cup and lost that week of practice.”

Other teammates came to the same conclusion. Rickie Fowler, who lives near Woods in Florida and plays out of the same club, texted Woods regularly to ask if he would like to practice or play money games.

“Obviously trying to kick him in the butt to try to keep him motivated to get back out here and play,” Fowler said.

After they were done with their work, Fowler joined Woods a couple of times for unhurried dinners at the restaurant that Woods owns near the course.

“He loves the game and he wants to be back playing well,” Fowler said. “I know it’s probably been very hard for him the last two years, because golf is something he loves to do and he hasn’t been able to do it.”

The support for Woods has not been limited to the American players. The Englishman Justin Rose, a member of the losing Ryder Cup team, spent time on the range last week showing Woods how to get the most out of his adjustable TaylorMade driver, which Woods is experimenting with as he searches for replacements for the woods that Nike has phased out.

“I think they’re all ready to, I don’t want to use the phrase ‘pay it back,’ but I think they all want him to see him do well and be positive with it,” said Woods’s caddie, Joe LaCava.

The Ryder Cup team’s thread of group texts has become a daisy chain of support for Woods, with Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson, who also served as an assistant captain, among the most active. Reed likes to needle Woods, a 79-time tour winner, by referring to him as his “pod leader.”

After the United States clinched the Ryder Cup, Watson blurted out in the news conference: “I have Tiger’s cellphone number now. Yes! I’m going to text you all the time.” On Tuesday, Woods was asked if Watson had been true to his word. He mouthed an exaggerated “Yes,” but then he broke into a broad smile.

Woods’s fellow golfers, including those like Zach Johnson and Snedeker who are old enough to have lost to him when he was in his prime, read the situation right. They recognized that the first step to making Woods great again was acknowledging his ordinariness.

“You have to joke around with Tiger because he’s lived under a microscope his whole life,” Reed said. “And he’s watched everything he’s had to say everywhere because anything he says or does will get scrutinized. He doesn’t want to be treated like one of the best athletes in the world. He wants to be treated like a normal human being.”

Harden scores 20 in Rockets' runaway win over Denver 128-110 (Yahoo Sports)

DENVER (AP) — The Houston Rockets sure didn’t look – or play – like a tired team.

James Harden scored 20 points and the Rockets led from start to finish in beating the Denver Nuggets 128-110 on Friday night.

Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson had 18 points each and Sam Dekker added 17 for Houston, which completed an impressive back-to-back road sweep that began with a 132-127 win over Golden State in double overtime Thursday.

The latest victory came despite the Rockets’ 5 a.m. Friday arrival in Denver. Most of the players and coaches got little sleep before playing the Nuggets.

”It’s a good win for us,” Harden said. ”Last night, double-overtime game, getting in at 5 a.m. and not really sleeping. … We got off to a really good start, guys knocked down shots and just rode that wave the entire game.”

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said the win was especially gratifying because of the circumstances and the way his team played.

”A lot of positives,” he said. ”They found the energy to go ahead and finish up the game. It wasn’t always pretty. It’s a special group that can conjure that kind of energy in altitude after getting in at 5 o’clock in the morning.”

Wilson Chandler had 24 points to lead the Nuggets, who had won three straight against the Rockets. The Nuggets have lost four of five overall and fell to 3-7 this season at home, the high-altitude venue where they once routinely dominated.

Moreover, coach Michael Malone lit into his squad after the game over its lackluster performance.

”It’s one thing to lose games but when you’re outworked on your home floor – Miami did it, Houston did it – I have no explanation,” Malone said. ”All I know is that it is unacceptable and that’s why I do apologize to our fans because they deserve better.

”We’re a bad team right now and I have to start doing a much better job because the direction we’re headed right now is in a bad, bad place.”

Up by 10 points at halftime, the Rockets took a 99-84 lead into the fourth quarter and kept the pressure on the rest of the way as part of a sharpshooting display that included converting 17 of 37 3-point attempts against a listless Nuggets defense. Denver went 9 of 30 from beyond the arc.

The Rockets took a 73-63 halftime lead over the Nuggets, who allowed a season high in points by an opponent over the first two quarters.

Houston led by as many as 15 in the first half, hitting nine 3-pointers, including four by Anderson, to gain early separation with its highest-scoring output over the first two quarters this season.

The lack of defensive urgency by Denver was epitomized by Gordon’s fast-break layup at the halftime buzzer as he drove the length of the court virtually uncontested in the final 3 seconds of the period.

TIP-INS

Rockets: F Trevor Ariza left the game in the final minutes with back spasms, D’Antoni said, apparently after coming down awkwardly while going for a rebound. … Houston has made at least 10 3-pointers in 19 consecutive games, the longest streak of its kind in NBA history. … Houston’s previous high for first-half points was 71 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 26. … The Rockets are 7-2 on the road since beginning the season 2-3.

Nuggets: C Nikola Jokic missed the game because of a sore left wrist. … G Gary Harris remains sidelined with a right foot injury. … G Will Barton returned from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the previous two games.

QUOTABLE

”They played harder than us. They wanted the game more than us. It was a bad loss on our home court. They came back very, very late (to Denver). We should have jumped on them since the beginning and it was the opposite.” – Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari.

UP NEXT

Rockets: Completed a five-game trip and return home to host the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

Nuggets: Play at Utah on Saturday night in the first stop of a six-game trip.

Canada's Elisabeth Vathje wins skeleton gold in Whistler

Canada’s Elisabeth Vathje won gold in the first women’s skeleton World Cup stop of the season on Friday night at the Whistler Sliding Centre track.

After leading the pack after the first run, the 22-year-old Calgary native easily beat out her competition with a two-run time of 1 minute 49.25 seconds. This was her second World Cup gold, following another first-place finish in Calgary two years ago.

“God is good. I’m just so thankful to him for this opportunity,” said Vathje. “It was freeing. I just had freedom on this track, and it’s emotional because I have crashed here probably more than anyone. I knew there was a chance I could win it, but anything happens on race day. I set my goals and if I stuck to that I knew I could do well today.”

Following her on the podium were Jacqueline Loelling of Germany in second place with her time of 1:50.09, and Tina Hermann, also of Germany, in the bronze-medal position in 1:50.11.

“I won by 84 hundredths [of a second], and that’s insane,” Vathje added. “These are the best girls in the world, and I’m blown away.”

Olympic gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold of Britain took fourth in her first race since winning the 2014-15 world championships, while Ottawa’s Mirela Rahneva rounded out the top five. Canada’s third slider, North Vancouver native Jane Channell, finished 16th.

Later Friday, Canada’s two-man bobsled team of Justin Kripps and Jesse Lumsden tied for fourth place.
