Thrashers New Marketing Tool, Black NHL Players in Atlanta

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The Atlanta metropolitan area sports a population that is more than 50 percent Black, and its hockey franchise has only led the National Hockey League (NHL) in empty seats since its inception in 1999.

This year they are trying something new in the predominately White NHL, a roster that at times this season has sported five Black NHL players. The Thrashers have used that fact and those players’ likenesses in ad campaigns designed to sell tickets.

The Thrashers, of course, deny that considerations other than hockey talent impacted the makeup of their roster. “It all just kind of happened,” Thrashers President Don Waddell told the New York Times. “It wasn’t like we went out and tried to pick up Black players.”

Black NHL players currently with Atlanta include Johnny Oduya, Dustin Byfuglien, Evander Kane and Anthony Stewart. Nigel Dawes opened the season with the Thrashers but was shipped to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey Association (AHA) after five games.

NHL.com reports that Atlanta also has Akim Aliu playing in Chicago and this summer drafted Sebastian Owuya, a Swedish defenseman like Oduya who is playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League as well as Yasin Cisse, a Boston University freshman from Quebec. Rounding out the Thrashers’ group of Black prospects is Jordan Samuels-Thomas, a budding power forward from Hartford, Conn. who led Bowling Green State University’s team in scoring as a freshman last season.

But what do people think about the Thrashers using their Black roster and pipeline as a tool to sell tickets? “It would be silly not to try to promote it and market it,” Kane said. “The Thrashers are probably going to try to do that and I’m more than willing to be a part of that and be one of the focal points of that campaign.” Kane was the fourth player selected in the 2009 NHL entry draft, the highest selection ever amongst Black players. “Hopefully someday somebody can beat me,” he told NHL.com.

Byfuglien is also a top-tier NHL player. He was a finalist for the Conn Smythe Award last season as MVP of the playoffs when his Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. He is unique in that he is an NHL-caliber player as a forward and a defenseman. Oduya is a solid, stay-at-home defenseman while Stewart is still trying to establish himself in the NHL.

The Thrashers are the first U.S. team to employ five Black NHL players. The only team to do so prior was the 2000-2001 Edmonton Oilers. Black players used to be a novelty in the NHL, but now are becoming more common. “It’s starting to get normal,” Oduya told NHL.com. “I like that.”

Through the end of October, the Thrashers were 4-4-2, including wins over the Washington Capitols, the favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals, and Western Conference powerhouse San Jose Sharks. They also beat the Rangers when they took their show to the “Big Apple.”

“We’re fun to watch,” says head coach Craig Ramsey.

They also could be inspiring. Regal hopes that somewhere in the southeast there is a young Black hockey player working hard to become a Black NHL player because of the example set by Kane, Byfuglien and the other Black Thrashers. “If you can inspire somebody to push that extra mile and see maybe that it’s possible for them to do it, that would be a good thing,” Oduya said to NHL.com. “It’s good to see that it’s something that is not a weird thing anymore.”

NHL Stanley Cup – June’s finalist battle

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The 2008 NHL season began on October 4, and 30 teams are now vying for the ultimate piece of hardware. The regular season will conclude on April 12, giving way to a long and intense playoff struggle. Eight teams from each conference, Eastern and Western, qualify for post-season play.

In the Eastern Conference, champions of the Atlantic, Northeast, and Southeast divisions automatically reach the playoffs, and they will be joined by the teams with the next five best records. It’s the same in the Western Conference; the five best non-division winners will advance along with the champions of the Central, Northwest, and Pacific divisions.

Home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs goes to the three division winners in each conference, seeded 1 through 3 based on best record and the No. 4 seed, the team with the next best record. No. 1 plays No. 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5. In the second round, the highest advancing seeded faces the lowest remaining seed, with the two middle seeds squaring off.

In all rounds leading up to the Stanley Cup finals, between the winner of the Eastern Conference and the winner of the Western Conference, the higher seed in a series always has home-ice advantage, which means that team hosts Game 1 and 2, and if necessary 5 and 7. The lower seeded teams host Game 3 and 4, and if necessary 6. Every series is best out of seven games; in other words, the first team to four wins takes the series. If a team wins the first four games of a series, of course, the last three are not played.

In the Stanley Cup finals, the team with the best record will have home-ice advantage. For example, even if the No. 1 seed advances out of the Western Conference and the No. 2 seed emerges from the Eastern Conference, the No. 2 seed from the East will have home-ice advantage if it had a better record than the West’s No. 1 in the regular season.

At the moment, there are two clear-cut favorites to reach the 2009 Stanley Cup finals, which will conclude in June. No team has been more dominant than the San Jose Sharks, who boast a 23-3-2 record (23 wins, three losses, two losses in overtime or shootout. Teams receive two points for a win, one for an overtime loss, and none for an outright loss).

The Sharks have a 13-point lead in the Pacific Division and a six-point lead over the second best team in the West, the Detroit Red Wings. In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins lead the way with an impressive 20-5-4 record. The Bruins own a seven-point advantage in the Northeast Division and a four-point lead on the East’s second best team, the New York Rangers.

The Red Wings are the NHL’s defending champions, as Detroit defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins four games to two in last season’s final series. Looking to make a repeat appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, Pittsburgh has a solid 16-9-4 record and would easily qualify for the playoffs if the regular season ended today.

Red Sox trade Clay Buchholz to Phillies

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/2gYUlqz

Red Sox trade Clay Buchholz to Phillies

The Boston Red Sox have traded starting pitcher Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball first reported the news, and it was quickly confirmed by multiple reporters. The Red Sox will receive minor league infield prospect Josh Tobias in return. Boston did not have to send cash, as the Phillies will absorb the remaining one year and $13.5 million left on Buchholz’s contract.

With the Red Sox having trade for Chris Sale earlier in the offseason, there was no room left in the starting rotation for a pitcher who has always been incredibly talented but underachieves on an annual basis. Buchholz finished the 2016 season with an 8-10 record and 4.78 ERA. He has always had issues remaining healthy, and he was eventually moved to the bullpen last season when he lost his spot in the rotation.

Buchholz, who threw a no-hitter in 2007, was always a source of great frustration for Red Sox fans. You could clear see he had the stuff needed to be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he never seemed to be able to get over the mental hump. Most Boston fans won’t be sad to see him go.

The Three Most Popular NBA Jerseys

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The NBA is back. This means more coast-to-coast excitement. Is this the year the East takes over? With the Lakers not being able to land Chris Paul because of a blocked deal by the NBA, with the Spurs nearly ancient and with the Mavericks missing Tyson Chandler, the door is wide open for the East. Even if you think the Clippers can make a run this year and somehow make the NBA Finals, they don’t have any playoff experience. The demise of the West is great news for the East, especially for teams like the Heat and Bulls. Regardless of what team you’re rooting for, it’s important that you support your team by looking into NBA jerseys.

What are the most popular NBA jerseys? Do you know the answer? If not, don’t worry. We have the answers. If you’re not an NBA fan and you’re thinking of buying a gift for someone who is an NBA fan, the last thing you want is to buy a jersey for the 6th man on the Wizards. That probably wouldn’t go over too well. Even if you’re an NBA fan, don’t you want to own the most popular NBA jerseys? It simply looks cooler. If you’re not into looking cool, then consider NBA jerseys for players you like or players that play the same way you do.

The most popular NBA jersey shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s LeBron James. The interesting thing about this is that LeBron is hated by many. Therefore, when people see this jersey on your back, they’re either going to give you an accepting nod or they’re going to turn away from you. If they turn away, who cares? You’re representing.

The second most popular NBA jersey is Kobe Bryant. This is somewhat surprising. While he still might be the best player in the game, he’s on the tail end of his career, which usually leads to fewer jersey sales. Another big factor is that Kobe doesn’t attack the rim anymore. He’s more of a jump shooter, which the younger crowd doesn’t think is as cool. However, Kobe always finds a way to beat the odds, even when it comes to public perception. Just don’t expect Kobe to win anymore titles. His supporting cast is fading fast.

The two most popular NBA jerseys might have been relatively easy to predict, but there’s no way you’re going to guess #3 on the list. If you guessed Dwayne Wade, Amar’e Stoudamire, Kevin Durant or Dwight Howard, you would be wrong. Number three on the list is Rajon Rondo. Before you shake your head in disbelief, there are two major reasons for this. One is because he’s a young point guard who makes exciting plays. The other reason is because he plays in Boston. Los Angeles, Chicago and New York might all be great basketball cities, but until you live in Boston and understand the culture, you don’t understand how important basketball is here. This isn’t a city where half the population watches the Celtics game. This is a city where almost everyone lives and breathes Celtics.

Those are the three most popular NBA jerseys. Do you think the list will be the same after this season? Don’t be spineless. Make a prediction and buy the NBA jersey of the player who you think is most likely to break out this season.

Joe Mixon told police ‘it felt like a dude hit me’

Joe Mixon told police ‘it felt like a dude hit me’

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon was interviewed by police three days after he punched a woman at a campus eatery in 2014 and knocked her unconscious, and there were a number of holes in his story.

During the interrogation, Mixon implied to police that he was unaware it was a woman who hit him before he responded by throwing a swing at the victim.

“I was putting my head down and she just took off on me (motions to punch himself in face) after that,” he said. “Even though she pushed me, I didn’t think she was gonna hit me. And even though she hit me like she hit me, I was so shocked because she hit me so hard. It felt really like a dude hit me. “My face just started ringing, and after that it was just like a reaction.”

This was before Mixon had seen the video of the incident. Once he watched the footage, he must have realized the evidence shows that although the woman did make contact with him first, he was clearly looking at her face-to-face and knew it was a female who had shoved and slapped him. You can see the video here.

Mixon also admitted to using a homophobic slur toward a male friend that the victim was with, but he said that was in response to the friend calling him the N-word.

“The gay dude … he called me something,” Mixon told investigators. “He was like (slur). So then I was like, you got me messed up. And then I called him a (slur). And after that, the girl, she dropped her purse, that’s when she came in my face, pushed me, and then my glasses came off, and then, like, I had, like, jumped at her, like, to watch out. And then she came in my face. I put my head down. And she swung on me.”

Mixon was charged with assault and got probation. He was suspended for the 2014 season but has since become a star for the Sooners.

Like the Ray Rice incident, many people were not truly outraged until they saw first-hand how violent the encounter actually was. Whether Mixon was antagonized or not, he knew he was hitting a woman. The video leaves no doubt.

Goalie Ray Emery Backstops Blackhawks Surge in Standings

Sports Insider http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Last season the Chicago Blackhawks were defending Stanley Cup Champions in name only. The hard salary cap in the NHL forced the team to dispose of many of the players responsible for the championship, including goaltender Anti Niemi. The Hawks sank to eighth in the Western Conference last spring and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Vancouver Canucks.

This season has been a different story for the surging Hawks. With about one-third of the season passed, Chicago is second in the West behind the surprising Minnesota Wild. And one of the main reasons for the team’s success is goaltender Ray Emery.

Ray Emery, 29, joined the Blackhawks during training camp with no guarantees about making the team. In 2010 he was struck with avascular necrosis, the same hip condition that ended Bo Jackson’s football career and severely hampered him in baseball. Doctors were able to stop the spread of the condition and after a stint in the minors returned in March 2011 with the Anaheim Ducks, where he had a 7-2 record, 2.28 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.

The Blackhawks kept Emery, originally as a backup to Corey Crawford. Crawford came up through the Chicago system and had a good year in 2010-11 in his first shot as the Hawks’ regular netminder. Unfortunately for Crawford, he had trouble stopping pucks and after 23 games he had a goals-against-average of greater than three and had stopped fewer than 90 percent of shots that had come his way. This provided Emery with the opening he needed, and he didn’t let Chicago down.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville noted that, “every game Emery has started for us he has earned points, except for the one game which was our toughest as a team the whole year [a 9-2 loss in Edmonton].” Crawford, meanwhile, is taking a break from games and working with Chicago goaltending coach Stephane Waite.

Ray Emery remains humble despite the recent turn of events. After stopping 35 of 37 shots in a 3-2 overtime victory over the San Jose Sharks, Emery demurred when asked about his claim to the starting position. “I think it might be an opportunity to give [Crawford] a bit of a rest,” he said. “Maybe that’s what my contribution can be to a successful playoff team — is having a fresh goalie.”

Besides a fresh goalie, Emery is also a seasoned goalie at the NHL level. In 2007 he was the starting goaltender for the Ottawa Senators club that went to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to Anaheim in five games. He has also logged NHL time with the Philadelphia Flyers, where he tied Hall of Famer Bernie Parent’s team record with 12 wins in a month in March of 2006.

Ray Emery spent the 2008-09 season with Atlant Moscow in the Russian Kontinental League when he received a $ 2 million contract. He returned to the Flyers after one season when the devaluation of the ruble led to an unexpected cut in his salary.

As the NHL season moves on it will be interesting to see how the Crawford-Emery situation plays out in Chicago. It’s the home-bred goalie versus the well-traveled veteran. Normally in that situation the home grown player has the advantage, but Ray Emery is putting up impressive numbers and generating wins for the Blackhawks. In professional sports we have reached the point where winning trumps all. Regal is excited about Ray Emery’s prospects in the windy city.
