Yaya Touré pleads guilty to drunk driving despite claims he unintentionally drank
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Touré pleaded guilty to drunk driving on Monday despite claiming that he unintentionally consumed alcohol, he said in a statement.
“Over the last two weeks there has been some confusion as to why I was charged with drink [sic] driving, as it is well known that I am a Muslim and do not drink. I have always refused alcohol,” Touré explained in the release.
“It was important to me that I told the court that I had not intentionally consumed alcohol. The judge in his sentencing remarks accepted that I had not been intentionally drinking. Drink [sic] driving is a serious crime and even though I was not intentionally consuming alcohol I accept the ban and fine and I would like to apologize for this situation.”
According to The Telegraph, he told a judge that he poured what he thought was Diet Coke from a jug at a party, and despite a strange taste, he continued to drink it. Touré was the designated driver for a group and while he felt “tired,” he did not suspect he was drunk, and drove them home with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
The 33-year-old was fined a little more than $68,000 and banned from driving for 18 months.
