For much of the NBA’s history, the league has been dominated by big men. From the likes of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to The Dream and Shaq, a force in the middle has been the centerpiece to a multitude of championship teams and dynasties. But after Shaq came into the league in the early ’90s, there seemed to be a drought of dominant big men in the NBA. With the emergence of Yao Ming, the league had another true center to promote, but just a couple of years ago, he and an aging Shaq looked like the last of a dying breed.

The game of basketball has changed. With the fast tempo of the league and the basketball world’s infatuation with the three-point shot, as well as the current rules for perimeter defense, the NBA has become a more guard-oriented league. Now, the likes of Chris Paul and Derrick Rose are more valuable than ever and are players that can dominate games on a similar level to the way centers once did. Highlight reels of slick passes and long-range jumpers sell NBA tickets these days, not post moves. Just when it seemed like the idea of a true center was all but dead, the 2004 draft brought a 6-11 kid out of Atlanta by the name of Dwight Howard. The following year the Lakers took a chance on a 17-year-old Andrew Bynum. Last year the Blazers lucked out and won the lottery for the right to take the next big thing in Greg Oden.

So here we are, with Shaq all but gone and Yao struggling to play even 60 games per season, but we’re not starving for centers thanks to the three aforementioned youngsters. These three centers could keep the tradition of the dominant big man alive. Howard is already a force, the unquestioned beast of the Eastern Conference. He has played in all 82 games in the first four years of his young career and has averaged a double-double each season. In the 2007-08 campaign, Howard averaged 21 points and 14 rebounds at just 22 years of age.

Bynum struggled to earn playing time during his first two seasons in the league, but broke out in his third. Though he only played in 35 games thanks to a knee injury, the seven-footer averaged a double-double in 2007-08 and racked up nearly three blocks per game. He looks like the real deal and has filled out considerably physically, to the point where his mere presence is imposing.

Oden missed all of his rookie campaign after undergoing the dreaded micro-fracture knee surgery, but he’s considered an elite center prospect nonetheless. Though he will be followed around by injury concerns, Oden should recover from the surgery thanks to his age, as we saw with Amare Stoudemire. Oden has the physical tools to become a dominant defender and rebounder and any offensive development will be icing on the cake. With these three guys all under the age of 23, and Ohio State center B.J. Mullens on the NBA horizon, it’s safe to say that the age of the big man in basketball is not completely dead.

San Jose Sharks Off-Season Report

Alrighty, here we go. So we’ve haven’t heard about any major moves from the Sharks and GM Wilson in free agency or trades this off season, except for the signings of Ortmeyer and Nichol, as well as some resignings. But recently there’s the “Heatley” rumor going around that the Sharks might have a go at him.

This would be a huge move for San Jose if they could pull it off, though I’m sure it’d cost the team a few players and prospects. After all the Oilers offered three quality players for Heatley and were denied, so this should serve as a benchmark.

Such players might included Michalek, Vlasic, and maybe even Cheechoo. The former two have time on their side and probably haven’t hit their peaks yet. It’d be a shame to lose them, as they’re both solid players.

Vlasic’s offensive skills have always been evident, but his defense has definitely improved of late. The Sharks should try holding onto him, in addition to Michalek. Ideally, a trade of Cheechoo, Murray, and another role player or future draft pick would be best for the San Jose franchise.

Cheechoo, because he doesn’t seem to have it anymore after that 50 goal campaign in 05-06. Plus, he’s been somewhat injury prone ever since but when he’s healthy, he still doesn’t produce these numbers anymore. Murray, on the other hand, they can trade, because the Sharks already have a Murray-type player in Mike Moore.

The Sharks should probably look to move Marleau as the third piece of a potential deal. His stock rose last year after an improved season, but many still doubt his ability to be a beneficial team captain.

Marleau should lose the captain role either way. Thornton and Boyle are both more qualified in the leadership category in my opinion, and one of them should replace him.

All we can do now is wait on what Wilson does and hope that his moves will take us to the Stanley Cup.

There are many animals which you would not dare cross paths with, unless you are doing a segment for MTV’s program, “The Wild Boys” or a show like the ones for the Discovery Channel which deals with the creation of documentations for these animals. Such animals, like the Black Mamba is one of the feistiest and fastest snakes in the world and is regarded by many as the deadliest snake in the whole world. In the deadly waters of the Amazon, one would not dare put their legs down the water as it may be filled with carnivorously biting Piranhas or even the preying crocodiles nearby. If you are familiar with those Spanish shows that deal with raging bulls, you may have seen one of those unwanted scenarios where the matador would actually be hit by the bull, then you would know that in the first place, individuals should not even be getting in the way of these fired up beasts that can crack our bones if we are hit. Want a junior of these bulls? What about rams? They can hit you hard like these bulls, but are actually lighter and faster. Not a bad combination right? Speed and power is the perfect knock anyone out.

It is no surprise that the St Louis team named their football team under that animal. The St. Louis Rams is definitely living up to the animal which they have chosen. After all, what more could you want than power, speed, and accuracy in hitting your opponents. And indeed this team packs a mean punch when they are out there in the field. The franchise already has two NFL Championships and one Super Bowl championship under its belt. Like many other teams in the NFL, this team is no stranger to the shifting as with terms of “residency”. Prior to being based in St. Louis, the Rams originally started in Cleveland. Afterwards, for fifteen seasons, the team then moved to Anaheim, Los Angeles as the Los Angeles Rams. At the year 1995, this is then when the club has been staying in St Louis up to the present. Although it still is owned by the same individual, the NFL allowed it to be a separate entity since the no part of the previous management joined the movement and only four of the players rode with the team. And now looks like the Rams are on their way to continue their rampage in knocking out the other teams in the NFL.

The owner of this club surely did choose a good name. Considering that it is a football team, what more would any person want that drive through any other opponent. Rip them, and bury them to the ground! That is how a ram would finish its opponents. Football then would be the sport to bring out the ram in all of us. Let the animal inside be set free and do its own thing. So what animal would you be, the predator or the prey?
